Take the “Pool Safely” Pledge this Summer

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-4. This summer the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is asking children and parents, alike, to take a pledge to “Pool Safely” in an effort to spread awareness around pool safety.

Pool Safely is an ongoing campaign by the CPSC to educate the public about pool safety, pool product recalls and the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. The act, signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2007, was inspired by a young girl named Virginia Graeme Baker who drowned after a powerful and faulty suction from a hot tub drain trapped her under water. After her tragic death her family advocated tirelessly for pool and spa safety, eventually convincing congress to pass the act.

In order to help prevent tragic accidents like the one that caused Virginia Graeme Baker to drown, as part of the Pool Safely campaign, the CPSC has created the Pool Safely Pledge to encourage children and their parents to practice pool safety at all times. The CPSC has asked all who sign the pledge to share it with family and friends, either through social media, email or in person, to help spread the awareness even further.
