Bus Accident in Cary

CARY – A field trip to Raleigh for a group of Asheboro middle-schoolers came to a halt this morning when three of their buses collided with each other on U.S. 64 West.

About 35 students were transferred to area hospitals, though none of their injuries was life-threatening. Cary police said most of the injuries appeared to be neck and back pain or aching arms and legs.

Lt. Tracey Barker of the Cary Police Department said four buses from Asheboro City Schools were on a field trip to the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. The buses contained a total of 113 students.

Barker said that as the buses pulled up to a stop sign about 10:30 a.m., the driver of the third bus in line briefly looked down after hearing a buzzer. When the driver looked up, the bus ran into the back of the second bus. That bus then collided with the first bus. The fourth bus was not involved.

The accident occurred on U.S. 64 West heading into Cary near Edinburgh Drive.

One student was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh. The others went to either WakeMed Cary, WakeMed Apex or Rex UNC Health Care.

A number of ambulances responded to the scene. Some students were strapped to gurneys as a precaution to keep them immobile, authorities said.

Injured students were taken to the nearby Courtyard by Marriott hotel to stay warm. Additional activity were on the way from Randolph County to pick them up.

The buses had only minor damage, officials said.

The students left North Asheboro Middle School shortly after 8 a.m. this morning, said Brad Rice, director of support services for the Asheboro school system. April Thompson, assistant principal of the school, was with them.

Rice said parents of injured students were receiving a phone alert telling them what had happened. Parents of injured students got individual phone calls, he said.

Traffic in the area was not moving for much of the morning.
