Boy Scout Dies At State Park

A Concord Boy Scout hiking with his troop fell to his death at Stone Mountain State Park on Saturday, September 22nd. Chris Overcash was only 100 yards from a marked trail when the incident occurred. Students at his high school, A.L. Brown, had painted the school’s spirit rock with messages of support.

In cases like these questions can arise about the safety measures taken inside the park to prevent mishaps. At what point does it cross into a wrongful death case? By all accounts, Chris was a cautious and deliberate hiker and many of his classmates were surprised by his death. Were there any additional measures that could have been taken inside the park? Extra signage, guard rails, etc., would they have made a difference?
