Sleep Deprivation and Driving

Sleep deprivation adversely affects the human brain and impairs its ability to perform various daily tasks, including operating a motor vehicle. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that 1 in 5 serious motor vehicle accidents involving injuries are somehow related to driver fatigue. NHTSA estimates the number of accidents related to driver fatigue may be as high 100,000 each year.

Driver fatigue has been blamed on numerous truck and commercial vehicle accidents due to the long hours that truck and commercial drivers generally log. Recently a tour bus crash in New York resulting in 15 deaths prompted the NY DMV to suspend the driver’s license. Following the incident, a random search of tour buses resulted in 10 more drivers loses their driving privileges. Read the story here.
