NTSB Recommends Banning Cell Phone Usage While Driving

This week, on December 13, 2011, the NTSB recommended that all states ban talking or texting on cell phones while in the car.

Texting, emailing or using a cellphone while driving is simply too dangerous to be allowed anywhere, federal safety investigators declared Tuesday, recommending that all states impose a total ban except for emergencies. Read more here.

The ban would even include the use of hands free devices. As it stands right now, 35 states have imposed a ban on texting while driving, North Carolina being one of them. The law in NC actually extends to all digital media, therefore including in addition to texting while driving, it is illegal to take pictures, read email, play with your music, download apps, and surf the internet. However, it has been widely reported that enforcing that law is somewhat difficult.

On Wednesday, the North Carolina DOT put out a press release urging motorists to “Just Drive”. The NCDOT also created a PSA.

The holiday season is now in full swing and over the next couple weeks many North Carolina residents will be hitting the roads throughout Raleigh, Durham and beyond. Therefore it is vital to be reminded that distracted driving, whether by phone, makeup, or driving while impaired, can kill.

Be safe. Drive safe.
