Motorcycle Safety Awareness

Did you know that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month?

Perfect timing - the weather is warmer and the days are longer, which means  bikers are hitting the roadways from the Triangle to the Triad and beyond, crossing the state of North Carolina.  Consumer Reports stated that NHTSA, a supporter of the Motorcycle Awareness Month, has reported that motorcyclists have a higher tendency than passenger vehicle riders to die after a crash.

According to this report, motorcyclists were 25 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash and five times more likely to be injured, based on miles traveled in 2009. Read the full article here.

It is important for motorcycle riders as well as passenger vehicle drivers to be cognizant of one another while sharing the roadways. It is vital that car drivers check all mirrors and blind spots to ensure that a motorcycle rider is not beside them prior to changing lanes or turning. Likewise, motorcyclists need to recognize the risks and try to ensure they can be seen. Bike Safe North Carolina offers bike safety courses which can be found here.

The North Carolina DMV requires operators to have a motorcycle endorsement on their license. In addition,  all operators and passengers on a motorcycle or moped must wear a helmet that  complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218.

As always, we all need to be aware of one another on the road and remember we all share it. However, if the unfortunate happens, and you find yourself a victim of injury due to a motorcycle or car accident, call the Law Office of D. Hardison Wood. We are here to help.
