Two half brothers were killed in a traffic accident early Sunday morning and were found nearly 12 hours later by family members.

N.C. Highway Patrol troopers estimate the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on Odell Owen Road based on information they have gathered.

The driver, 22-year-old Brandon Terry Rush of Pine Top Road, and his passenger, Darrell Eugene Everhart Jr., 28, of Goodluck Drive, were killed after Rush ran off the road, struck a guardrail and then hit several trees before the vehicle stopped.

According to a report by State Trooper E. Phillips, Rush and Everhart were traveling north on Odell Owen Road when the vehicle crossed over the center line and then continued off the roadway before striking the guardrail.

The report indicated that both Rush and Everhart were ejected from the vehicle, which was split in two pieces as a result of the impact.

Phillips estimated Rush’s speed at 100 miles per hour and estimated the speed at impact to be near 85 miles per hour.

Rush and Everhart were found by their fiancés, a stepsister and a fiancé’s brother around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Rush and Everhart’s sister, Michelle Adkins, said much of the family had been out searching, worried after the fact that Rush and Everhart had not returned home Saturday night. She said the two had been in Thomasville for the evening.

Adkins said both Rush and Everhart didn’t have life insurance and that her family has started a fund to help with funeral costs and expenses for each of their fiancés and children. Rush had a 2-year-old daughter, and Everhart had a 7-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter.

“We set up a fund at SunTrust (Bank), it’s called the Darrell Everhart and Brandon Rush Memorial Fund,” Adkins said. “The family will use the money for any burial expenses and for their children.”

Adkins said donations can be made at any SunTrust branch.

Flowers marked the scene Monday where Rush and Everhart crashed. Nearby residents and friends walked the crash area, seemingly in disbelief.

Scott Baker of Goodluck Drive had been a neighbor to Everhart for nearly 10 years. He described the news of Rush and Everhart’s deaths as “surreal.”

“They didn’t deserve to die,” Baker said.

Baker’s niece was engaged to Everhart.

“He (Everhart) was a great fiancé,” Baker said. “The worst part is that he had two kids.”

Baker said he did not wish to give any of the family members’ names.

“Darrell was an exceptionally great young man,” Baker said. “Those two will forever be missed.”
