RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal single-car accident that killed three people on Highway 421 southbound near Browns Meadow Road in Randolph County.

Investigators believe the driver of the 2004 BMW, which ran off the road and struck four trees, was speeding prior to the crash just after 2 a.m. Monday. Troopers estimated the vehicle's speed at 100 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The victims were identified as Brandon Chavis, 26, who was driving the vehicle, Forrest Andrews, 27, and Jason Morris, 30.

Troopers said Morris wasn't wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. Chavis was also not wearing a sear belt, troopers said.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor.
