WESTFIELD — A Mount Airy teen was sent to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical condition from multiple injuries after his car collided with a tree yesterday.
Steve Walker, Emergency Medical Services shift supervisor, said the wreck involved an 18-year-old male from Mount Airy. The name of the teen is not being released at this time.
The single-vehicle wreck took place on Westfield Road in Mount Airy near Woodville Baptist Church. The teen’s car left the roadway and struck a tree, according to John Shelton, director of Emergency Services.
Shelton said it is not yet known why the teen veered from the road, but the North Carolina Highway Patrol is still reviewing the accident.
The wreck was called in at 3:02 p.m. yesterday, and the first responders were the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department, Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad, Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry County EMS.
According to Shelton, the teen was trapped in the car for 15 to 20 minutes before being extricated.
Walker said the teen was taken by ground transport to Baptist Hospital with several bad fractures to his arms and legs. Walker said a call was put in to AirCare, but the service was not available at the time. He said the teen was conscious and alert at the scene of the wreck.
A portion of Westfield Road had to be closed while crews cleaned up the wreck. Trooper Rex Carter is investigating the cause of the wreck.
