Erie Man Dies in N.C. Car Accident

DURHAM, N.C. -- An Erie man died Monday when his car struck a tree in Stem, N.C., about 20 miles northeast of Durham.

Stephen R. Spencer, 25, of 1317 E. Eighth St., was alone in the car at the time of the crash, which happened on Highway 1139. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

A friend said Spencer was in North Carolina to arrange the funeral of his mother, Susie Hale Gross, who was shot and killed on March 31 in the restaurant she owned in Berea, N.C.

Police said Hale Gross, 50, was killed by her boyfriend, Daniel Matthews, who then killed himself.
