A head-on collision in Derby Sunday night claimed the life of 37-year-old Aberdeen resident Joyce Anne Durham.
Two children who were in the car with Durham were taken to the hospital.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Durham was traveling south on Sycamore Lane in a 1999 Nissan Maxima at 8:18 p.m. Sunday when an oncoming Toyota passenger car driven by 17-year-old Benjamin Tyler Terry of Rockingham crossed the center line and struck her vehicle.
N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Harper said an investigation is still underway, and charges are pending.
“Because of the injuries in this accident, we haven’t been able to get everything we need,” Harper said. “As far as we know at this point, alcohol did not appear to be involved.”
Terry was also transported from the scene in an ambulance, along with the two juvenile passengers of Durham’s car, Harper said.
Terry was alone in the vehicle when authorities arrived on the scene.
The vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane of Sycamore.
Harper said that Terry could face a charge of vehicular homicide, pending on the outcome of the investigation.
