CAR SEAT SAFETY
When you place your child into a car seat, it is your expectation that it will protect your child from harm. Unfortunately, a manufacturer’s negligence can lead to a defective car seat entering the market which could potentially cause great harm to your infant or child. In North Carolina, there is legal recourse available for parents of children who have been injured by defective infant car seats.

Infant car seat recalls have been issued because some products were causing the following injuries to children:
- Cuts & Scrapes
- Contusions
- Choking Hazards
- Concussions
- Skull Fractures
As a result of some terrible incidents, several infant car seat recalls have been made over the years. In May of 2007, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued infant car seat recalls of Evenflo Embrace infant car seats and carriers. Evenflo received 679 reports of the handle on the car seat unexpectedly releasing which resulted in 160 injuries to children ranging from skull fractures to concussions. Additionally, in December of 2009, 447,000 infant car seats manufactured by Dorel Juvenile Group were recalled. There were 77 reported incidents of the car seat handle bolts coming loose resulting in at least 3 infant injuries, including a head injury.
It is important to ensure that you purchase a car seat best suited for the safety of your child. Make sure that your car and car seat is equipped with the LATCH system. The LATCH system has two lower anchors and one upper anchor in the car hidden in the seat cushion and attached to the back of the rear seat. On the car seat, there are clips that attach to the lower anchors and a hook or clamp that attaches to the upper anchor. Tighten the belts connected to each anchor after all have been attached. It is also essential that the car seat is correctly secured in the car. For step-by-step instructions and a video on how to properly insert a car seat click here. Your child’s safety depends on correctly securing him or her in the seat and securing the seat into the car. Be sure to keep these things in mind when using your car seat:
- Make sure the harness straps are secure and in the right position
- Make sure the harness chest clip is in the right position
- Lock the seat belt properly
- Secure the seat belt and use the correct seat belt path
- Do not place the car seat in the path of an air bag
An injury to a child is any parent’s greatest fear. It is particularly troubling when something you have entrusted to protect your child is actually responsible for causing them harm. While an infant car seat recall may prevent future incidents, it can never repair the harm that has already been done. D.
