SHERRILLS FORD — Brian Hieb, the driver of the truck involved in a fatal accident that killed a Denver woman Tuesday, has been charged with DWI in the crash.
Just before 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Hieb was driving a Chevy Silverado north on Slanting Bridge Road when he crossed the centerline and sideswiped one pickup truck before correcting and getting back into his lane, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol accident report. Hieb then crossed the centerline again and crashed into a Mercury sedan.
Hieb then drove off the left side of the road and overturned, according to the accident report. The wreck occurred near Independence Lane.
The driver of the Mercury, Sandra Fay Campbell, 50, of Denver, died in the wreck. Her son, Darren Moore, 26, who was a passenger in the car, had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Hieb initially refused medical treatment, but then asked to go to the hospital, said Keith Bost, chief of Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue, who was also dispatched to the wreck.
Hieb’s dog, which was riding in the truck with him, was killed in the crash, Bost said. Hieb’s truck was completely crumpled, its roof crunched in and one wheel broken off.
Campbell’s car was in worse shape. Bost said the driver’s door was torn off in the crash and was in the ditch.
The driver of the other pickup truck who was struck first was not injured. His name was not available. His truck had minor damage, according to the Highway Patrol.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the accident.
According to the Watauga County clerk of court’s office, Hieb has DWI, speeding, simple possession of marijuana and open container charges pending against him, with a court date of Feb. 21.
